Margot Tenenbaum: The Surfing Years

This special commission was for a fan of Wes Anderson's Royal Tenenbaums. As a fan myself, this was an absolute joy to create. I am making it available as a giclee print for a limited time to celebrate the impending release of Wes Anderson's new movie Astroid City!

My favorite part of exploring this theme was imagining what Margot would ride.  I knew it would be a single fin, something fun-sized for travel.  I was trying to think about what the graphics would look like, what Wes would do.  Something simple, graphic and personal.  I landed on a simplified family flag on a retro turquoise resin tint.  

The bikini was easy, Lacosté.  A bikini version of her iconic sport dress. 

"That autumn, by way of a private investigator, Margot Tenenbaum's family came to understand that her deeply private personal history had substantial gaps. During one of these gaps, what my painting presupposes is...what if she surfed?"
